Tagxedo Roster Tutorial

Hello friends! Over the last couple of days, I have received multiple email messages about creating the classroom roster using Tagxedo that I blogged about here. So...I thought I would do a step by step tutorial for creating a roster like mine if you would like to try it for yourself.

Here is the one I created:

I have listed some common problems and the fixes below so everyone can easily replicate what I have done here.

How do I get my name to be bigger than my students' names?
Type your name in multiple times. The more times you type in a word, the bigger it appears in the word cloud.

How do I keep my name from separating into two words?
Do not space between Mrs. and your last name. Tagxedo does not read spaces. You will also need to go to click word/layout options (see below) and change punctuation to yes.

How do I get my name to be horizontal and the students' names to be vertical?
Click on Shape and then choose Classic Cloud (V) at the bottom of the screen. To get it to look the way you want, you may need to change the font, layout, and orientation. This part takes a bit of playing around.

How do I get every word to post only once?
Click on word/layout options. Then, click layout and make sure "Allow Replication" is on "No". This will allow your students' names to only show once.

These were the most common questions that I have received. If you still have trouble getting it to work the way you want, just email me or leave a comment and I will be more than happy to help!

    1. I am not sure why you are having this problem. Try changing your word count under Word/ layout options to the number of names you are typing in.

    2. I had the same problem today, but I figured it out by doing these steps:

I typed my first name like this

      Mrs.Johnson:3

with all the students names after. Then I clicked on Word/Layout, Layout, then Classic. It changed all my Yes/No options to No. Then I clicked on Word, then Yes for Punctuation. Once I hit Submit, the teacher's name was larger and all the student's names were the same size. Hope that helps and works for you!

  5. I had to change the tightness of the words to get my name to appear in it. Keep lowering the tightness until your name appears large.

Thanks for the great idea, Mrs. Teachnology! I can't wait to get my class list to make a real one :)

    1. I used Pea Faith Dots. You can download it here: http://kevinandamanda.com/fonts/fontsforpeas/
You will need to search for it in their posts, but it is really easy to download and install. You will need to upload it to Tagxedo as well. Just click font---upload font in Tagxedo to use it.

  9. Thanks so much for the tutorial. It definitely helped. I'm actually trying to create a gift for my son's teachers, but for some reason not all the names are showing. I only have 20 students' names and I need 27. I was able to get the teachers name larger and students' the same size.

    1. What a great idea for a teacher gift! Try going to word/layout options and turning the emphasis to 100%. Also make sure your word count is enough for the amount of words you have typed in. You can try refreshing the layout until all the names appear too. I have had to do this before, to make it work. It should work fine if you just have names. Sometimes it gets tricky when you have names with a lot of other words.

  16. I'm used to wordle, but it doesn't work at school anymore and it doesn't do the cool shapes. However, I can't get all the words to appear on my tagxedo which is very frustrating. A wordle tip that works on tagxedo. Put this symbol ~ between words you want kept together. It's like glue.
